Description

BURY ST EDMUNDS

TL8564SW HATTER STREET
639-1/14/431 (West side)
12/07/72 Nos.23 AND 24

GV II

House; now a shop on the ground storey and part of the 1st
storey with living accommodation in the remainder. Late
C15/early C16 rear with C18 extension; C17 front range.
Timber-framed and rendered with lining to the ground storey
only. Plaintiled roof with a coved plaster eaves soffit.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics. 4 window range: sashes with
vertical glazing-bars, 2 to the upper light, one to the lower,
in a heavy moulded flush cased frame. 2 shop windows to the
ground storey with an entrance door up steps. Between the 2
storeys is a moulded wooden band. At the extreme right the
recessed house door of No.24. 2 flat-headed dormers with
2-light small-paned casement windows. 2 wings at rear.
INTERIOR: the ground storey of No.23 is in 2 bays, flanking a
narrow half-bay, probably for a cross-entry. Main beams (one
boxed) with a small chamfer and scroll stops. On the upper
storey the one-bay room to the north has a similar main beam
to the ground storey and studding exposed along the end wall.
Attic storey not seen.
No.24 has a ground and 1st storey at the rear of the building
and the upper storey also partly in the front. On the ground
storey, a late C15/early C16 2-bay range, parallel to the
front, with a valley gutter between, has a heavy main beam
with a wide chamfer and is linked to the front of the building
by a large internal chimney-stack.
On the 1st storey a cambered tie-beam, with arched braces
removed, probably supported a crown-post. A collar-purlin in
the attic has arched braces at each end. To the north of this
rear range is a further 2-storey gabled addition containing a
single room on each storey. The C17 range along the street
frontage may replace a former medieval hall range.
