The apparent fragmentary remains of a medieval gatehouse, part of the buildings surrounding Castleton. It could, however, be the remains of a barn contemporary with Castleton Farmhouse (qv), which dates from early C16, then largely rebuilt and incorporated into a late C18 or early C19 barn. C19 granary added to left and C20 projecting gable in centre.
Local lias limestone rubble barn originally said to have been the gate-house to the castle, and now converted to domestic use. The body of the building, with mainly medieval walling, has a later gable projecting from the centre which hides the recorded arched entries. It has french doors and a window. To the left of this is a boarded door in an existing opening with a 2-light window above converted from a vent, to the right is a slit vent. To the left of the barn is the added granary with stairs leading to an upper floor door with 2-light window to the left. Lower ridge line to this section. Rear elevation not seen at resurvey, but this was previously recorded as having a C19 lean-to.
Interior not available at resurvey, but this farm building has been converted to domestic use since first listing. The two tall 2-centred arch stone openings which it embodies, and which are recorded in RCAHMW are presumably still in-situ.
Included, notwithstanding modern conversion, for its special interest as a part of the historic Castleton Farm of which it formed the medieval gatehouse.
