Probably 1821 when the Tanat Feeder was realigned to enter above the upper lock. The bypass helped regulate the water supply at N end of Montgomeryshire Canal.
By-pass pond with curving rubble revetment, culverts brick-lined with repairs in later C19 blue brick. Spillway refaced in modern engineering bricks. Paddle gear in centre of spillway; rack and pinion system built on wooden frame with separately braced ratchet catch.
Included for group value with the other canal structures in an exceptional location at Carreghofa Locks.
