History

The house was formerly the Square and Compass Inn and in the early C19 was the property of Devereaux Mytton of Garth Hall.

Description: Built in the late C16-17 and C18. The house appears to comprise a cross parlour wing of two unequal bays with gable to road, and a stone built kitchen block, now a living room with kitchen to rear, probably replacing a former timber hall in the late C18 or early C19. C20 outshut on SW side of cross wing.

Exterior

Stone and timber framed with colourwashed infill panels, and part uncoursed stone; random slate roof. The framing is close studded with corner braces, and decorative angled bracing in the front gable. Timber boarded door with small light, and timber 3-light casement windows. The stone section to the right has camber headed 3-light transomed casements.

Interior

Interior of wing has a front parlour with a large brick stack with 4 flues, probably C18. Chamfered cross beam with check and scoop stops. The rear wall is also framed, the rear chamber extended C20 to rear and now without historic features. Main posts not jowled. Roof has single tier of purlins and principal rafters crossed at apex and tenoned ridge piece. Stone building also has a single tier of purlins made of re-used timber morticed for windbraces.

Reasons for Listing

Included as a distinctive part-timber framed building in the centre of the village, of group value with other listed items in the Conservation area of Guilsfield.
