Brigands Inn

A Grade II Listed Building in Mawddwy, Gwynedd

Uploader's Comments

The outlaws known as Gwlliaid Cochion Mawddwy the Red Raiders used to frequent this 15th century Coaching Inn, they terrorised the area and travellers alike, they were said to be locals who had rebelled against the new laws of the 16th century. Many were hanged for their crimes and there is still a gate on the Welshpool Road 'Llidiart y Barwn' which refers to the Baron who persecuted them.
