Probably mid C18 frontage with an early and later C19 shopfront. The rear part of the building may be older.
Church Street had some widening as part of the improvements associated with Priory Street and White Swan Court in c1837, but according to the maps the south side of the street had been set back in part previous to this and this property would appear to be one of these. It is not known whether No. 5 is a complete rebuild or if C17 fabric remains. Note that it is closely aligned with Nos. 1 and 3 as well as the early C17 Agincourt house as brought forward in the mid C19.
The main elevation is rendered and painted with painted plaster quoins and window heads, roof not visible. Narrow frontage to street suggesting a medieval plot. Three storeys, three windows above a central entrance shop. Shop front with modillion cornice on brackets and Corinthian column at either end, panelled stall-riser, shop window with two vertical panes on either side of central recessed entrance, fascia. Three cambered arched windows with voussoir heads and projecting keystone, 6 over 6 pane sashes with curved top rail. Parapet with band and coping. Rear elevation not seen.
Interior not available at resurvey, apart from the shop premises.
Included for its special architectural interest as a multi-period building and as part of the continuous run of historic buildings in Church Street.
