A memorial stone within the church cemetery. Here is some background information for its inclusion.
The Abercarn colliery disaster was in the Prince of Wales Colliery in Abercarn, on 11 September 1878, killing 268 men and boys, though this figure could be even higher. The cause was assumed to have been the ignition of firedamp by a safety lamp. The disaster is the third worst for loss of life to occur within the South Wales Coalfield.
Due to the ongoing fires within the mine, it was flooded using water from the nearby Monmouthshire Canal. Over a period of two months, some 35 million gallons were poured into the mine to dampen the fires. The mine did not reopen until 1882.
