The Church of St Margaret is a major landmark in North Wales and attracts thousands of visitors each year who whilst admiring the architecture are often puzzled by the presence of a graveyard for over 80 Canadian soldiers who served during the First World War but have gravestones showing that they died in 1919 the year after the war ended.

The Canadians were based at Kinmel Park army camp awaiting repatriation when they were struck down by the flu epidemic which swept through Europe and North America.

There were about 17,000 troops at Kinmel Park and following delays the soldiers patience ran out and riots ensued during which five soldiers died, four are buried at St Margaret's and the other was buried in New Brunswick.
