Description

Circa 1770-1780. 4-storey stuccoed corner tenement. 4 bay elevation to Nicolson Street, ground and 1st floors altered as shops. 3-bay gable and 2-bay wing to West Nicolson Street, Gibbs surround to doorpiece.

Statement of Interest

Following the feuing of Lady Nicolson's Park in 1757, estates along the line of Nicolson Street began to be developed for tenements. Development in this area accelerated with the completion of the South Bridge in 1788 which provided the first direct link between the New Town and the Southside of Edinburgh.

The corner tenement first appears on Ainslie's 1780 map of Edinburgh on Chapel Street. The street is labelled West Nicholson's Street on Ainslie's 1804 Map of Edinburgh.

Listed building record and statutory address updated (2015). Previously listed as 'Nicolson Street West, 1 and 85, 87 Nicolson Street'.
