Description

1879. Celtic Cross to memory of Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse (1843-1878), circa 10' high. Rounded rubble base bearing inscribed shaft with entwined foliate ornament, continued on cross head. Flanked by 2 benches.

Statement of Interest

Partner of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg Gotha memorial cross, to Princess Alice's brother. Erected by Queen Victoria, inscribed 'Her name shall live though now she is no more'. Payment for work on the monument was made to J Thomson and to 'Reid'. Predates later ubiquitous use of Celtic cross design for war memorials. Part of the rich detailing across the castle estate.
