1900-01. Celtic Cross memorial to Alfred Ernest, Duke of Saxe-Coburg Gotha and Duke of Edinburgh. Granite. Base, battered pedestal with inscription and cross above carved with Celtic guilloche. Sited in enclosure fenced with fine, wrought-iron hoop railings.
Erected by the Duke's mother, Queen Victoria, in the short interval between the death of her son in 1900 and her own demise. Partner memorial of the Monument to Princess Alice, the Duke's sister. Part of the rich furnishings of the estate and landscape, and designed before the Celtic cross became an ubiquitous choice for memorials after the First World War.
