Description

Circa 1950. Ian G Lindsay; Wattie Cooper, mason. Elegant classical tempietta, using columns from demolished Altyre House, sited to S of Candacraig House in formal garden. Stepped polygonal base surmounted by 6 Doric columns and polygonal cornice. Ashlar.

Statement of Interest

The Tempietta contributes structure and classical dignity to the formalised area of Candacraig House gardens where they overlook a wilder picturesque valley as it descends to the River Don. Undated sketches of the 'proposed folly' by Ian G Lindsay & Partners, are held at the Royal Commission. Unlike Lindsay's sketched, the tempietta is not roofed. The former owner of Candacraig recalls the skilled local mason, Wattie Cooper 'mixing mortar for the pillars with a hefty addition of liquid manure from my mother's herd of pedigree Aberdeen Angus, under the eye of my father, a stickler for perfection, who wanted to achieve an umber shade to them!'
