Description

Mid 19th century two-storey plus dormer 3-bay house. Squared and snecked grey whinstone rubble with light grey sandstone ashlar long and short quoins and dressings.

NW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical elevation; central door. VR Type C wall letterbox at far right. 3 later dormers to roof.

Modern glazed door. Modern replacement glazing. Graded grey slate roof. Gabled dormers with slated cheeks and gables. Sandstone skew table. Rendered end-stack with clay cans. Modern rainwater goods

Statement of Interest

Part of a short terrace including Nos. 108/110 and 100-104 (adjoining). The terrace is a good example of a mixture of housing and commercial premises and of a group of simple local stone buildings which make an important contribution to the streetscape of this part of Selkirk, situated as it is on a main road into the town.

The terrace is marked on early O.S. maps as 'Sloethorn Bank' and steps lead directly from the front of this building to Dunsdale Haugh and Ettrick Mill. It is likely that this terrace had some close connection with the nearby Ettrick Mill, founded in 1835-6 and the biggest multi-storey spinning mill in the Borders.
