Late 17th century. 2-storey, rectangular-plan house made Z-plan by additions including rear former bakehouse. Harled. Stone surrounds to most windows.
SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: advanced bay to far left; central, mid-level window. Ground floor window and 1st floor window to right return. Entrance door to right of advanced bay; 1st floor window above to right. 2 ground floor windows to right; 2 1st floor windows centred above. Small window between 2 ground floor windows.
SW ELEVATION: attached to Hatta Cottage.
NW ELEVATION: partially seen; 1st floor window to right; ground floor window to left. Advanced bakehouse to far left.
NE ELEVATION: ground and 1st floor window to right. Protruding stones to centre and left (raggles of former adjoined building). Bakehouse set back slightly to right; plain elevation.
Replacement windows; replacement timber door and tirling pin. Steeply pitched roof; clay pantiles. Crowsteps to lower half of gables; flat skews to principal elevation to right and bakehouse. Gable apex stacks; corniced to NE and bakehouse.
INTERIOR: not seen, 2001.
The steepness of the roof pitch suggests that this house may originally have been thatched. Rowan Bank was restored in 1961 by the South of Scotland Electricity Board. Following its restoration, it was used as a show house to demonstrate the possibilities of converted properties in Culross. An adjacent building to the NE is visible on the 1860 OS map with its gable projecting onto the street. Rowan Bank faces Back Causeway, which follows the line of an earlier street which ran from the Abbey to the Sandhaven. For brief history of Culross Burgh see Culross, The Cross, The Study.
