Circa 1850. 4-storey 11-bay tenement block with public house to ground at left. Droved ashlar with polished dressings (painted to ground to left). Dividing band between ground and 1st floors; cill courses to 1st and 3rd floors; eaves cornice and blocking course; projecting cills to 2nd floor. Regularly fenestrated. Modern door and glazing to left; timber panelled doors with plate glass fanlights to flats in 4th and 8th bays from right; modern glazed door and access ramp in 7th bay from right.
Modern glazing to ground floor. Predominantly 12-pane and plate glass in timber sash and case windows above. Grey slates. Corniced rendered stacks with circular cans.
Stone cleaning of the right hand section of this block gives it a disunited appearance. The plan of this area more or less as built appears on Wood's 1820 map of Edinburgh. The Merchant Company had adopted William Burn's plan for the Grindlay family's Orchardfield estate in 1820. This building provides an important piece of townscape, articulating the approach to Thomas Hamilton's King's Bridge.
