Early 19th century. Pair of arched pedestrian, square-plan gatepiers flanking central vehicular entrance. Ashlar; keystones to arches. Ball finials atop; inner ball-finials atop higher cope. 2-leaf central iron gates; single iron gates to pedestrian entrances; stepped boundary wall with coped piers to left; railings atop curved wing wall to right.
Distinctive gatepiers on prominent site. Good classical detailing includes key-stoned arches, main cornice and ball finials. Built on the site of an older mansion, Castlehill was erected in 1804, by Patrick Ballantine, remaining in Ballantine hands until 1909. The house was demolished in the 1960s, to make way for the new general hospital which was proposed for the site, but this was later built elsewhere, however the walled garden remains near this site.
