Description

Probably 1838. 2-storey, 3-bay former gatehouse. Dressed squared and snecked rubble with raised ashlar quoin strips; dry-dash to rear. Eaves course. Segmental-arched and circular openings.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: canted face with part-glazed timber door to centre and narrow lights in flanking bays, window to each bay at 1st floor.

SW ELEVATION: cart arch converted to window in bay to left of centre, window to right and further small window to outer left, 3 regularly disposed windows to 1st floor, those to bays 1 and 2 flanking glazed oculus.

NW ELEVATION: gabled elevation with 2 modern windows to 1st floor, ground floor detail obscured by screen wall.

6- and 12- lying-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows, except to modern windows. Graded grey slate.

BOUNDARY WALLS: rubble boundary walls.

Statement of Interest

Formerly part of St Leonard's flax mill, the gatehouse was probably erected in 1838, together with nearby St Leonard's Court, (both listed separately) when Messrs Swan of Kirkcaldy extended the mill premises.
