The OSA comments upon "a manufacture (which) had sprung up, which promises fair at present to render Kinghorn one of the most flourishing towns upon the coast of Fife; this is, the teasing, and rolling, and spinning of cotton and flax, by means of the Arkwright and Darlington machinery", (p239). At that time there were 4 mills already running and a fifth planned for the same year. By 1845 St Leonard's flax spinning mill employed over 300 workers. It was taken over and improved by Messrs Swan of Kirkcaldy who also owned other mills in Kinghorn. However, flax spinning ceased here in 1865, and in all Swans' mills by 1886. The building was unused until 1900, and is now (1999) engineering premises. St Leonard's Court (formerly part of St Leonard's Mill) is listed separately.
