Description

Dated 1840 with later additions and alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay cottage with Jacobean-style strapwork to symmetrical front; various additions at rear. Coursed and stugged cream sandstone to front; sandstone ashlar dressings; coursed render to sides and rear. Base course; stugged quoins. Stop-chamfered corners to front at ground comprising corbelled, concave niches with foliate stops beneath polygonal angle shafts. Architraved margins to front; sandstone mullions; projecting cills.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: studded timber panelled door in gabled porch projecting at centre; shouldered surround; decorative carving surrounding oval panel dated '1840', thistle and fleur-de-lys motifs above; urn-shaped finial surmounting stepped and scrolled gablehead. 4-light canted windows at ground in bays flanking entrance; decorative carving to parapets (foliate frieze to right; stylised floral frieze to left); tripartite windows aligned in outer bays at 1st floor.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: full-height, gabled wing to left; single window in bay to right.

3- and 4-pane timber casement windows to front; 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows to sides and rear; small rooflight to front. Grey slate roof; stone-coped skews; stepped skewputts. Corniced and paired sandstone apex stacks to front; apex stack at rear; various circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods (bracketed to front at eaves); decorative sandstone water spouts to canted windows (beneath parapets).

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATE: rubble walls partially enclosing site. Iron pedestrian gate to front.

Statement of Interest

Noted in the OS Name Book as "...a neat and commodious little cottage, pleasantly situated, having a good garden attached." A most unusual cottage which has retained much of its original detailing. Marked on the 1858 OS map as 'Abbey Cottage' and possibly once associated with the nearby Coldingham Priory (see separate list entry).
