Description

18th century with later additions and alterations. Symmetrical 2-storey, 3-bay, classically-detailed farmhouse with lower 2-storey wing at rear forming near L-plan; further single storey additions to side. Whitewashed harl to front and sides; predominantly whitewashed render to rear; plain harl to side additions; cream sandstone dressings (whitewashed in part). Moulded eaves course; droved quoin strips.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: main block with timber panelled door centred at ground; round-arched, intersecting-traceried fanlight; narrow side lights; keystoned, Venetian surround. Venetian windows at ground in flanking bays (intersecting-traceried uppers, narrow side lights); single windows in all bays at 1st floor. Single storey range recessed to right with modern window off-set to right of centre. Further single storey addition to outer right with square-headed opening off-set to left.

S (SIDE) ELEVATION: single storey gabled wing projecting to outer left with various additions to front. Main block set behind with single windows in gabled range to left; single windows in lower, 2-bay wing to right.

E (REAR) ELEVATION: blind elevation to gabled wing projecting at centre; irregularly fenestrated block recessed to right. Single storey additions recessed to left of centre with lean-to porch in re-entrant angle.

N (SIDE) ELEVATION: gabled block to right with single windows at both floors to right; small attic light at centre. Lower wing recessed to left with single window at 1st floor.

Plate glass, 4-, 6- and 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows; some modern windows. Grey slate roofs; stone-coped skews; moulded skewputts. Corniced, brick-built apex stacks; various circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

GARDEN WALLS: harl-pointed rubble walls partially enclosing site. Low, coped curved wall to front with hooped iron railings and pedestrian gate.

Statement of Interest

A well-detailed farmhouse which remains fundamentally intact - its Venetian openings being particularly notable. Said to have been a coaching inn at one time, the steading once associated with the house is set to the E - its curved layout following the road and thereby, allowing coaches to pull up to the house more easily (see separate list entry). The former farm cottages are set to the SE. The name 'Flemington' is said to derive from the fact that a colony of Flemish merchants established themselves here. Rutherfurd notes a Mr Logan as farmer here in 1866.
