Description

Earlier 19th century, possibly incorporating earlier fabric and with later additions and alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay, classically-detailed farmhouse with full-height wing at rear forming near L-plan; single storey, lean-to addition in rear re-entrant angle. Whinstone rubble to front; painted harl to sides and rear; painted sandstone dressings throughout. Base course; moulded eaves course. Narrow quoin strips; droved quoins; droved long and short surrounds to raised margins; projecting cills.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: steps to flush-panelled door centred at ground; border-glazed fanlight; classical doorpiece with flanking pilasters, stylised Ionic capitals, plain frieze, cornice, blocking course; single window aligned at 1st floor. Single windows at both floors in flanking bays.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: main block to left with single window at ground to outer left. Full-height range recessed to right with single window at 1st floor off-set to left of centre; single window in single storey, lean-to addition to front.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: blind elevation to full-height wing projecting to right. Timber door in lean-to addition recessed to left. Single windows at both floors in bay recessed to outer left.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: main block to right with single window at ground in bay to outer right; single window at 1st floor to left. Full-height wing slightly recessed to left with small window at ground to right; single windows at both floors in 2 remaining bays to left.

Plate glass and 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roofs. Sandstone ridge and wallhead stacks (2 raised in brick); circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

GARDEN WALLS: heavily-pointed coped rubble walls partially enclosing site.

Statement of Interest

Noted in the OS Name Book as a "...commodious farmhouse two stories [sic] high..." A good and relatively intact example of an early, classically-detailed farmhouse. Rutherfurd notes a Mr Alexander Leitch as farmer here in 1866. Fairnieside steading is set to the N.
