A Category C Listed Building in Edinburgh, Edinburgh

Former Simpson Memorial Maternity Hospital

Uploader's Comments

Funded by a collection to commemorate Sir James Young Simpson and opened in 1879, this was Edinburgh's first planned maternity hospital. From 1915 it housed Britain's first ante-natal clinic, followed in 1926 by a post-natal clinic. In that year it amalgamated with the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh which opened a new Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion in 1939; now demolished. The older building continued to be part of the Royal Infirmary until 1994. After several years of neglect and decay, it has been revitalised as a modern hotel.
