John Young, soon after 1779. 2-storey, half-sunk basement and attic, 3-bay classical former house. Droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Base course, eaves cornice and blocking course. To centre bay, architraved doorpiece with mutuled cornice containing steps to deeply set door and 3-pane fanlight. Right bay with tripartite windows (including basement). Tripartite dormer to left.
3-storey 2-bay rendered rear elevation adjoined by much altered dry-dashed single-storey and top-lit studio attic mews building with double garage and former door to hayloft, now window with balcony
(No 24 Young Street Lane North).
Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Ashlar coped skews; stone stacks, rendered to W.
INTERIOR: not seen 1995.
The site was feued to the builder Young in 1779, and became officially known as Young Street in 1806. This house is a mirrored pair to No 13. A Group with Nos 1-7 and 13-21 (odd nos) Young Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Young Street and Hill Street contain the smartest versions of the 2-storey New Town house.
