Description

John Young, soon after 1779. 2-storey and attic, 4-bay former classical house. Droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Eaves cornice. To centre right bay, architraved corniced doorpiece containing steps to deeply set door and fanlight.

3 pedimented slate-hung timber dormers.

Irregular 3-storey 3-bay rubble rear elevation with adjoining 2-storey mews block converted to garages.

Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Ashlar coped skews; rendered stacks; grey slates.

INTERIOR: not seen 1995.

Statement of Interest

The site was feued to the builder Young in 1779, and became officially known as Young Street in 1806. A Group with Nos 1-7 and 13-21 (odd nos) Young Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Young Street and Hill Street contain the smartest versions of the 2-storey New Town house.
