Dated 1887. 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan. Red sandstone ashlar. Deep base course, string course, advanced eaves, blocking course.
E (MAIN) ELEVATION: segmental-headed door at centre, 4-panelled with fanlight, narrow window above. Full-height square bay advanced to left, tripartite windows. Bipartite windows to outer right bay. Band course dividing floors inscribed "Victoria Institute 1887".
N & S ELEVATIONS: red sandstone rubble; 5 bays; 3 windows to outer left and right closely grouped; ashlar cills.
Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Grey slate piended roof.
INTERIOR: not seen 1995.
BOUNDARY WALL AND RAILINGS: low ashlar plinth wall; plain cast-iron railings; slender cast-iron gate posts.
The Victoria Institute is one of the few remaining historic public buildings in Renton. It is now the public library.
