Early 19th century with later additions and alterations. Symmetrical 2 storey with attic, 3-bay plain classical hotel with lower, 2 storey, 3 bay flanking wings. Painted render over Pans Rock dolerite; painted dressings. Raised base course; lintel course beneath corniced eaves; painted blocking course. Long and short quoins and surrounds to openings to central block; pilastered entrance. Strip quoins to flanking wings; plain margins. Rectangular plan, random rubble pitched addition at rear; later additions to left and right.
N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: boarded timber door centred at ground; blind fanlight; surrounding doorpiece comprising flanking pilasters, plain frieze, cornice, block pediment, raised keystone. Single window centred at 1st floor; bipartite box-dormer above. Single windows at both floors in bays flanking entrance; 3-light canted dormers above. L WING: 2-leaf timber door in bay to outer right; bipartite windows in remaining bays to left; single windows in 2 bays at 1st floor. R WING: 2-leaf timber panelled door centred at ground; bipartite window in bay to right; single window in bay to left; single windows in 2 bays at 1st floor.
Replacement 2-pane glazing throughout. Grey slate roof (piended roofs to flanking wings); replacement rainwater goods. Corniced apex stacks to E and W (rendered to E); various circular cans.
INTERIOR: not seen 1997.
Despite the loss of its original glazing and various additions and alterations, the Anchorage has retained its basic symmetry (at the centre at least) and key features including a pilastered doorpiece and long and short dressings. Formerly the Portland Arms Hotel.
