Description

T Aikman Swan, 1923. First World War memorial with Arts and Crafts details. Sandstone ashlar with bull-face rubble at base. Square base inscribed circa 1945 with date 1939-1945 and bearing plaque with roll of honour. Octagonal moulded pedestal inscribed with dedication. Tapering octagonal shaft with moulded base and carved pelican feeding its young adjoined to S side; variety of floral and sylvan carvings in 4 cavetto moulded faces of shaft; thistle wreath at capital; cross finial terminating shaft hung with wreath, and with each header ornately carved.

RAILINGS: simple wrought-iron enclosure.

Statement of Interest

Original interpretation of standard form of memorial. Aikman Swan was an Edinburgh architect who had trained with Sir Robert Lorimer.
