Late 18th century. 3-storey, 3-bay symmetrical rectangular-plan public house. Painted harl at ground; painted render to upper storeys. Base course; dividing string course; crowstepped gables; corbels and hoodmoulds to 1st and 2nd floor openings to S, to 1st floor only to W; cill brackets to 2nd floor openings to W; painted surrounds to all other openings.
S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 2-leaf recessed timber door at centre; 'Golden Cross' inscribed on fascia; flanking recessed bow windows at ground. 2 single windows at 1st floor; sundial at centre; central single window in gablehead; corbel table with 'C' and '+' within; thistle motif.
W (QUEEN STREET) ELEVATION: 3-bay. Entrance doorways to outer left and left of centre; single window dividing; 2 single windows to right. Regular fenestration at 1st and 2nd. Shamrock to left gable, flower to right.
Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; corniced gablehead stacks; circular cans; crowstepped skews; moulded skewputts.
INTERIOR: not seen 1997.
'STRANRAER 1732' inscribed within stone sundial. Like the George Hotel, the Golden Cross served to accommodate travellers to and from the Stranraer-Ireland crossing. Corniced lintel above doorway left of centre to W elevation bears the date 1805, but the building?s deeds suggest erection around 1780.
