From the 12th century a hospital of St Andrew was on this site. By 1413 its mentioned as The Parish Church of St Leonard. In 1512 the College of Poor Clerks of the Church of St Andrew was founded and this building became its chapel. It originally had a tall tower at the west end similar to that of St Salvator. This was demolished in the 18th century. The present chapel dates mainly from the early 16th century but is much restored.
