The wall extends for almost a mile and has 13 towers and 3 gates. The wall dates from the 14th century and lower parts in places probably date from this time. It was rebuilt in the early 16th century when the towers and gate were added. It was commenced by Prior John Hepburn (c1460-1522) and fimished by his nephew Prior Patrick Hepburn (1487-1573).
