Description

Mid 19th century. 2-storey corner block occupying narrow gushet site. Squared and coursed rubble to flanks with polished ashlar at end elevation. Base course, string course (to Charterhouse Lane) and eaves course; in-and-out quoins.

E (single-bay) ELEVATION: pilastered timber shopfront with cornice and rinceau-decorated panel above; bipartite architraved window at 1st floor; gablet with carved roundel to centre and palm-leaf antefixae breaks eaves.

S (Charterhouse Lane) ELEVATION: 3-bays with central door and flanking windows set in round-arched recesses at ground; recessed architraves to windows at 1st floor.

N (Canal Crescent) ELEVATION: round-headed panel over door at 1st bay. Quoins divide 1st and 2nd bays.

Predominantly 12-pane glazing to timber sash and case windows at 1st floor. Plate glass to round-arched shopfront openings to Charterhouse Lane. Grey slate to piend roof at corner bay. Half-piended roof ro remaining 2 bays; skews and skewputs to W gable. Coped end stack with clay cans. Tall wall-head stack to NW angle. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

Statement of Interest

This is a distinctive example of an mid 19th century commercial and residential building located on a prominent gushet site on Charterhouse Lane and Canal Crescent. Its well-detailed single-bay end elevation treatment with rinceau decoration to the shopfront is of particular note, adding to the wider streetscape. It is visible on long axial views westward along Canal Street. Perth is widely renowned for its fine quality shopfronts which provide a key part of the character of the city centre and reflect the social and cultural history of the area. The building is identified as an Ink Manufactory on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey (1860).
