James Steel Maitland, 1936-9. Early industrial modernism on
urban site. Simple long rectangular plan with projecting
(? stair) tower to rear. 19-bay, 3-storey symmetrical
street elevation; flat roofed. Horizontally disposed, but
articulated by 4 shallow-advanced (and glazed) pylons,
centre and end bays (bays 2, 8, 12, 18) breaking wallhead.
Decorated at first and second-storey cill courses by
distinctive projecting corbel brackets. Strip windows with
iron-framed multi-pane glazing and wire-meshed rein-forced
glass. Vertical wall mullions with blue bronze-panelled
surface (brick beneath). Centre pair wall mullions
harled end gables (loading bay N). Rear elevation also
continuouslu glazed; subsidiary building attached now
partly demolished (1990).
Pylon arrangement is reminiscent of J J Burnet's mullioned
pylon towers (eg McGeoch's warehouse, West Campbell
Street, Glasgow)
