Description

Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, 1879, incorporating remnants of early medieval church; minor additions James Gillespie & Scott, 1915. Single storey, crowstepped Session House at N boundary of Churchyard on ground sloping to N. Squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings; architraved doorcase and shouldered and round-headed openings.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: crowstepped gable end with medieval niche, remains of foliate capital (probably 13th century) supporting round-headed glazed niche with roll-moulded surround below crown canopy (late medieval) at centre and timber door in shouldered doorcase to right, churchyard gate adjoining at left; louvred arrow slit at gablehead.

S ELEVATION: 4 irregularly displaced windows with gas meter box below window in bay to left.

N ELEVATION: window to outer right and left.

E ELEVATION: timber door in wide squareheaded doorcase (altered) below small fanlight and relieving arch, louvred arrow slit at gablehead.

8- and 16-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows; 9-pane glazing pattern in fixed niche window. Graded grey slates. Coped ashlar stack with cast-iron downpipes and decorative rainwater hoppers.

INTERIOR: principal room with open-beam ceiling.

Statement of Interest

Executed 1879 from altered 1875 drawings. Prior to its current siting, the medieval niche housed the collecting plate. Contributions were so poor, however, that the Kirk-Session posted a member behind the window to ensure that each person contributed.
