Description

Robin Hotson contractor, 1775. Road bridge, 3 segmental
arches over River Esk. Built of grey rubble with ashlar
dressings, recessed arch-rings and pointed cutwaters (latter
with some red ashlar repairs). Roadway widened on steel
cantilevers 1880 (dated) - John Hyslop contractor - with
angle brackets and cutwaters carried upwards as supports,
latticed steel parapets with lamp brackets at abutments.
Roadway slopes downwards from E bank to W.

Thomas Telford is said to have worked as an apprentice on the construction of this bridge.
