Description

Built probably between the years 1866-70 (see NOTES). Park entrance comprising triple gateway, each gate with corniced square piers, the centre piers topped by decorative cast-iron lamp brackets. Low boundary wall, stepped to shallow slope; also terminal piers (one retaining cast-iron lamp bracket). Polished yellow ashlar; gates and railings are replacements.

Statement of Interest

The layout of Alexandra Park dates from 3 main periods; land was purchased by the City Improvements Trustees in 1866 for the purpose of providing a public park in the district (completed by 1870), and this was gifted to the Corporation. The area of parkland was extended in 1874-5 and again in 1903.
