Description

J M Biggar, architect, started 1924, completed 1929. Reconstructed and extended 1936 by W J B Wright 1936-7. Undergoing conversion (1991). Built for City Bakeries Ltd. 6-7 storey asymmetrical industrial building. Reinforced concrete with red sandstone dressings and red brick cladding. Narrow stair bay in penultimate SW bay with flanking pilasters, corbelled from 1st floor and rising above pediment over arched window: plain outer bay to left - with bipartite windows 3 functionally detailed bays divided by plain masonry strips to right, outer right bay with segmental loading bay at ground 5-storey canted oriel above clasped by masonry piers, mannered crowning segmental pediment. Side elevations with prominently detailed stacks and decorative masonry panels.

Variety of glazing, small-pane to sash windows (lower sash plate-glass in oriel).

Extensive rear range with greater areas of exposed concrete in some blocks.

Flat roof.
