A B MacDonald, city engineer, 1896-7 (1896 datestone) as police station facing east, into Craigie Street and fire station facing north into allison Street. They are both in plain Scots renaissance style, with eaves line broken by pediments/crow stepped gables; built of stugged and snecked ashlar with polished dressings; slate roofs. red brick corner range, linking above ranges (added probably late 1930's by Thomas Somers, city engineer), is not included in the listing.
To rear, low light-coloured brick ranges and fire practice tower 40' high by MacDonald all demolished circa 1990
POLICE STATION: has 2 long elevations ( the lesser to Allison PLace, ie south), 3-storeys, Craigie Street elevation roughly symmetrical, crowstepped 3-bay centre (inner door, flanking bays corbelled out above ground floor); 2 bays right, 4 bays to left, the terminal bays also crow-stepped. Single/mullioned windows, original glazing with small-paned upper sashes; painted city crest over main entrance.
FIRE STATION: is 4-storeyed, 4-bays, wide arched ground floor, openings. Converted circa 1990 to tenement, stone-cleaned, arches glazed, modern glazing above - otherwise original external appearance to front has been retained.
