Description

John Mcleod, 1887. Restored 3-storey, basement, and attic,

symmetrical. Renaissance commercial building on corner; 4

bays to West George Street, 8 bays to Wellington Street,

arranged 1-6-1. Southern return bays to Lane similarly

detailed. Central bay blank. Polished ashlar with channelled

quoins defining angles and outer bays to Wellington Street.

Basement, rising to full ground floor to S in slope of hill,

altered.

ELEVATION TO WEST GEORGE STREET: double entry at head of

stair oversailing basement area with coupled, console

keyblocked arched openings; ground floor windows panelled

aprons; 4-light Corinthian panelled anta mullioned, window to

left of entrance repeated with 3-lights in outer bays to

Wellington Street; central bays to Wellington Street (raised

ground floor) console keyblocked arched windows with

panelled, sculpted spandrels; ground floor cornice; 1st floor

pedimented aedicule windows with Corinthian columns, on blind balustrade, tripartite in outer bays to Wellington Street.

2nd floor: corbelled cill band; single light panelled

pilastered windows, tripartite in outer bays to Wellington

Street, 2-light in eastmost bay to Lane. Swag frieze with

triglyphs; modillion cornice breaking forward above quoins;

3-light corniced full dormer with console keyblocked arched

windows, small central half-round pediment and ball finials

breaking through continuous balustraded die parapet with urns

to West George Street, repeated in central bays to Wellington

Street with single-light, tripartite (panelled blind outer

lights) dormers with independent parapets to outer bays.

Return to Lane repeats main elevation detailing in 2 bays.

Shaped wall-head stack to Lane.

Balustraded boundary wall with corniced piers and balustrade

to entrance at West George Street.
