Description

Duncan McNaughtan, 1897-9. Free Classical, 5-storey and attic commercial building; 10 x 13 bays with facetted corner bays at SE and NE. Polished red ashlar.

Splayed basement course. Ground floor arched and flat-headed windows with Gibbs surround, sculpted keyblocks. 2 broken segmental pedimented entrances at Nos 40 and 60 Wellington Street in outer bays, sculpted tympana. Main entrance at No 50, richly carved arch, modillion cornice, leading to barrel vaulted vestibule. Frieze above with relief lettering "BALTIC CHAMBERS". Ground floor cornice. 2-light 1st floor windows, with Ionic column mullions in main elevation. Canted angle bays, corbelled above ground, rising to 5th floor; 3-bay central section linked at 2nd floor with continuous cill band on sculpted brackets. 2 and 1-light 1st floor windows, with canted outer windows from 2nd to 4th floors, N and S extreme outer bays narrow keyblocked, corniced windows. 3rd floor windows corniced, 1-, 2- and 3-light; round-headed windows with sculpted dripmoulds in outer bays. Modillion cornice broken by solid parapet on consoles in central bays. Square-headed, architraved corniced dormers in central section surmounted by barley-sugar columned aedicule.

Corner bays: 1st floor pilastered windows. Bold 1st floor cornice on sculpted consoles. 2nd floor 2-light corniced windows, 3rd floor 2-light stone transomed, keyblocked, corniced windows, balconies. Sculpted 4th floor frieze. Polygonal roof with bold cornice, open fretwork roof lantern and spire.

Elevation to Cadogan Street: similar detailing, greatly simplified. Segmentally-pedimented, Gibbs surround entrance at 3 Cadogan Street.

Elevation to Holm Street: as Cadogan Street. Arched ground floor.
