Designed by Thomas Somers, associated with Messrs Considere,
built by Melville, Dundas and Whitson, 1924-28. Reinforced
concrete faced with granite. 3 segmental arches. Carriageways
rising to centre. Balustraded parapets. Tiled pedestrian
subway at S bank. Middle span is 146 feet, outer 110ft 6ins
Memorial stone laid by King George, 12 July 1927. Somers was
Master of Works and City Engineer of Glasgow. The principle
of the continuous beam was adopted to overcome difficulties
in design. Total cost $249,877.
