David Horne, 1881-83. Terrace of 4 3-bay houses
stepped in slope now linked. Renaissance; 2 storeys,
basement and attic. Polished ashlar, chanelled at ground
floor, squared rubble rear elevation 1st, 4th, 9th, 12th
bays canted with 5-light windows; 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th
bays projecting with balustraded balcony over at ground
floor in front of 2-light window.
EACH HOUSE: central doorway at head of steps oversailing
basement area, recessed Roman Ionic portico with
sidelights. Single light window above.
Ground floor level band course. Ground floor cill band,
cornice. 1st floor cill band. Main cornice with dentil
band. Solid parapet broken by 2-light anta mullioned
dormers with shaped heads and finials. Round-headed,
set-back dormers.
W RETURN: main detailing continues 1 bay. Glazed,
slightly advanced 3 central bays flanked by blank bays.
S return: similar to W return.
Coped boundary walls, piers flanking entrances, cast-iron
railings.
INTERIORS: columned hall screens. 1st floor column
screens. No 3 columned niche in ground floor N room.
Nos 2, 3 sculpted, arched marble chimneypieces with
bay-leaf moulding and scroll keyblock.
NO 2: BILLIARD ROOM: by James Thomson 1889, coved,
corniced ceiling top lit with coloured glass, carved timber chimneypiece.
Interior detailing of high quality.
