John Young, soon after 1779. 2-storey, half-sunk basement and attic, 4-bay classical former house on corner site. Broadly droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Long and short rusticated quoins; base course; panelled band course above ground, cornice and blocking course. To centre right bay, architraved doorpiece with mutuled cornice containing steps to deeply set flush-panelled door and 4-pane fanlight; flagpole above. Piend-roofed sunken tripartite dormer to left.
Coursed rubble gable, truncated to right to provide full 3rd storey, with single bay at centre; small single storey and attic gabled mews block adjoined to rear with garages at ground.
Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Ashlar coped skews; stone stacks, that to E truncated and rendered; grey slates.
INTERIOR: swagged pilastered sideboard recess to left room at ground; 2-bay former Drawing Room. Cornices and other plasterwork survives.
The site was feued to the builder Young in 1779, and became officially known as Young Street in 1806. A Group with Nos 10-20 (even nos) Young Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Young Street and Hill Street contain the smartest versions of the 2-storey New Town house.
