Description

Circa 1790. 3-storey basement and attic, 8-bay former classical tenement. Droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings;

4 N bays and ground floor to S cleaned and droving lost. V-jointed rustication at ground; eaves cornice. Arched doorpiece with fanlight to left; common stair door to centre left bay; plain door with rectangular plate glass fanlight to 3rd bay from right. Piend-roofed tripartite dormer to far left; pair of bipartite dormers to right.

Timber sash and case windows; 12-pane and plate glass, fixed plate glass windows at ground to left with carved timber transoms. Rendered stacks; ashlar coped skews; grey slates.

INTERIOR: not seen 1995.

RAILINGS: cast-iron spearhead railings.

Statement of Interest

A significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh's New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. South Charlotte Street is important for its contribution to the setting of Charlotte Square.
