Thomas Brown, 1855, probably incorporating earlier fabric (see Notes). 4-storey 3-bay 2-window tenement with shop at ground floor. Coursed squared sandstone, ashlar (painted) to ground; random rubble to rear. Base course; projecting cills to upper windows. Modern boarded timber door to flats to left; modern glazed timber door to shop with plate glass fanlight, flanked by modern shop windows. Centre bay above ground blank, with wallhead stack.
12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Broad central wallhead stack to front, cement rendered wallhead stack to rear.
B group comprises Nos 1-5 Forrest Road, 1-3 Greyfriars Place, 4-6 Greyfriars Place, 30-34 Candlemaker Row (Greyfriars Bobby's Bar, 36-42 Candlemaker Row (including Candlemaker Hall), 44 Candlemaker Row, 46-48 Candlemaker Row, 50-54 Candlemaker Row, 56 and 56A Candlemaker Row and 58-64 Candlemaker Row. Rear elevations of group form eastern boundary of Greyfriars churchyard, setting for an important group of mural monuments. There was a building on this site from the early 18th century. Dean of Guild drawings show the rear of Brown's design incorporating the mural monuments of the churchyard.
