Postern gate in the Western Defences

Uploader's Comments

Having walked out of the Convention of Estates in 1689, John Graham of Claverhouse,'Bonnie Dundee', left the Castle from this gate while it was being besieged by the troops of William III. Although the Jacobite army he subsequently raised in the Highlands in support of James VII inflicted a decisive defeat on a government army at Killiecrankie, Dundee was killed leading a cavalry charge.
