Built by Robert Mylne under supervision of Sir William Bruce, 1674, restored 1861 (see Notes). Square-plan ashlar wellhead. Panelled swept stone roof with gadrooning to base and swagged urn finial. Cast-iron door to E with inscription (see Notes); City Arms and semicircular basin (concrete filled) to S; smaller ornamental basin to W; heraldic device to N; carving by John Rhind.
Inscription on cast-iron door reads 'The West Bow Well, erected by the Town Council 1674, repaired and altered by Richardson Brothers, Merchants, West Bow 1861.' Shepherd's illustration shows the well in use, and very much in its present form.
