Brassfounders' Pillar, Nicolson Square

Uploader's Comments

A relic of the International Exhibition of Science, Art and Industry held in the Meadows in 1886, the pillar was commissioned by the Edinburgh and Leith Brass Founders. The figure represents the biblical character, Tubal-cain, the "instructor of every artificer in brass and iron" (Gen. 4:22). Panels on four sides display shields bearing the coats-of-arms of 20 Scottish burghs.
