Mid 19th century. 4-storey,9-bay tenement with central pend and shops at ground floor, deck access balconies to rear. Cream sandstone, coursed and squared stugged rubble to front with droved dressings, squared and snecked rubble to rear, coursed and squared rubble to NE elevation.
Centre bays with moulded cill courses at 1st and 2nd floor; band cill course to 3rd floor; eaves cornice with blocking course bearing tablet to each 3-bay portion; shopfronts with later continuous dentilled cornice (continuing on Nos 244-252), basket-arched and roll-moulded display windows (recessed doorways to left, No 240 altered) and panelled dividing pilasters.
SE (FRONT) ELEVATION: tall roll-moulded carriage pend to centre with elaborate decorative 2-leaf cast-iron gates; 3 shops to right; 2 shops to left, doorway to common stair to outer left all with carved console brackets to cornice. Regular fenestration above. 3 centre bays slightly recessed with carved emblems framing central 1st floor window as remnants of signboard.
NW (REAR) ELEVATION: tall ground floor openings bricked-up; above
3 rows of cantilevered cast-iron access balconies with slender support columns and concrete decks; doorways alternating with paired windows.
NE ELEVATION: gabled with apex stack; 2 windows at ground floor.
4-pane timber sash and case windows. Black slate roof; mutual coped stacks (rebuilt).
INTERIOR: stone stair with cast-iron balusters.
