Description

Early 19th century house with decorative late 19th century style shopfronts (1985 replicas) projecting in former front garden, single storey extension to rear. Grey ashlar sandstone front of dressed ashlar with polished dressings; variegated rubble to rear and sides, coursed and squared to sides, coursed to rear. Dentilled eaves cornice; nailhead bands to door lintels.

SE (FRONT) ELEVATION: 4 projecting single storey flat-roofed shopfronts at ground floor, with continuous fascia and dentilled cornice, entrance to common stair to right of centre with rectangular plate glass fanlight and panelled door. Shops divided by flat pilasters with floral carving and ornate Corinthian capitals, recessed doorways with glass doors, display windows framed by slender basket-arched mullions, black and white marble entrance to Nos 74 and 72. Original house behind 3-bay with windows at 1st floor; large modern box dormer of

3 windows with panelled sidelights and later piended roofs to improve boxdormer profile.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: single storey rectangular-plan piend-roofed extension at ground floor; single windows at 1st floor; 2 modern box dormers.

NE ELEVATION: gabled with broad apex stack, single window in gablehead.

SW ELEVATION: gabled with broad apex stack; single storey shopfront at ground floor.

Timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing. Slate roof with lead flashings; 2 coped apex stacks (see above). Coped skews.

INTERIOR: ornate cornices to shop No 68, remaining shops with false ceilings.
