Description

Circa 1820. Symmetrical 3-storey and basement 9-bay tenement. Cream stugged ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Regular fenestration. 3 centre bays slightly advanced with panelled tenement door and fanlight at centre; inner flanking bays with deep-set doors and fanlights (decorative to No 43) at ground and blind windows in floors above. Base course; cill courses; band course above ground floor; cornice and blocking course, raised in tablet at centre.

End elevation (to N) of squared and coursed rubble with 4 blind windows to outer area of upper floors.

6-bay rubble rear elevation with full-height bow to N bay.

12-pane timber sash and case windows, with some plate glass, 4-pane and tilt and swing replacements. Grey slates; M-roof with twin coped ashlar apex stacks to bridged wallhead of end elevation, 2 rebuilt and rendered (to N).

WALLS AND RAILINGS: saddleback ashlar base for cast-iron arrowhead railings continued up ashlar steps. 2m high rubble garden walls divide and protect plots.

Statement of Interest

Grouped with Nos 31-39 (ODD NOS) Madeira Street (see separate listing), which continue the detailing exactly but are considerable later. Forms a setting for North Leith Parish Church (see separate listing).
